VULGAR VILLAGE: A BETTER WORLD is MICHAEL R. STEVENSON'S HEAVIEST project ever!!!! Michael is already well known amongst CD Baby listeners and fans. He is the Great-Grand Newhew of 1920's Starlet Fay Wray (of "King Kong" fame). He has released several successful solo instrumental guitar albums, selling in 10 countries, including the critically acclaimed SECRET PLANET and ROACH HOTEL. He won the Joe Satriani National Guitar Competition for Original Guitar Solo in the 1990's, and was opening act for Yngwie Malmsteen, Quiet Riot, Edgar Winter, and Ace Frehely. He also has bands with successful albums out on CDBaby, STINGER and TRAILER PARK HEROES. STINGER is a blend of Melodic Metal and Hard Rock influenced by SCORPIONS and DOKKEN, while TRAILER PARK HEROES is a free wheeling party band heavily influenced by Van Halen.

VULGAR VILLAGE is pure POWER METAL/ HEAVY METAL!!!! This new BAND features a sledgehammer crunchfest of a rhythm attack, powered by Drummer Ron Brett's best performance yet and Stevenson's ULTRA HEAVY and CRUNCHY rhythms. The GUITAR SOLO'S are Stevenson's MEANEST, UGLIEST and SICKEST while retaining his world-class phrasing, technique and his amazing speed rivaled only by the world's fastest guitarists. Stevenson's vocal debut is a nice surprise. His lyrics are sarcastic, heartfelt and thoughtful....delivering insight on today's crazy world! He actually has pretty nice, resonant lows, an effective raspy voice a la Dave Mustaine, and occasional surprising highs.

VULGAR VILLAGE: A BETTER WORLD kicks off with the Title Track. The intro is a cool industrial heavy riff and drums with an Egyptian sounding melody. Transitioning to a very cool crunchy verse with almost spoken, clear lyrics. The chorus incorporates some effective yells. Bridge is a very cool key change which "idles the energy" in to a very unique and powerful solo, the picking fast and clean a la Dream Theater's Petrucci. The outro is a cool crunchfest with nice double-bass flutters by Brett.

"Freaks" is more old-school metal with an Ozzy vibe. An extremely catchy and crunchy rhythm propels this song through very cool changes and bridges that entertain throughout. Lyrics are tongue-in-cheek about a government scientist that discovers bizarre experiments gone wrong. A classic solo in the Ozzy tradition, and an additional guitar extravaganza for the ages on the outro.

"Walls" is kind of the signature of the band. An anthem in the same type of style as "Symphony of Destruction" or "Walk." A true sledgehammer verse riff, and a rolling chorus with rapid-fire double bass. The lyrics rant against a hypocritical societal hierarchy. You will feel the message! A classic Stevenson solo that blends shred, feel and mean to perfection!

"Day and Age" is a favorite live. A beautiful clean riff, the song starts off as a "ballad." Nice melodic vocals, and captivating lyrics. The chorus goes crunchy in a riff you can't forget. An uplifting melodic solo downshifts back over the clean in to some beautiful and bluesy playing. culminating in to some blazing legato and a screaming harmonic the great guitar heroes would be proud of. Rides out over more great melodic and shredding solos.

"C UR Face." No B.S. This song inspired by Godsmack, obviously. Stevenson performs well with some resonant Sully Erna-esque vocals. A dropped-D crunchy rhythm and a mean solo with an interesting post-solo bridge.

"Road to Hell" may be the surprise track of the album. The intro is dark and ominous, almost like Classic Slayer. The verse is fast and almost punkish, sounding somewhat like Disturbed. The chorus is a real surprise, laying back in to a bluesy almost "cowboy" sounding groove. Somehow all the parts have perfect continuity. A nice combination of feels make this song work, and there is some really nice atypical "stream of consciousness" type soloing at the end.

"Awakening" is a nice "symphonic" instrumental. A beautiful acoustic guitar combines with melodic lead guitar and a nice production to add flow to the album.

"Turn the Tide" is a big hit with Iron Maiden fans. Harmonized lead guitar with an accenting rhythm section recall Maiden's glory. The vocals are more Mustaine than Dickenson, though. The lyrics encourage battling back against oppression, while the driving and cool rhythm guitars and pulsating beat drive the song. A true "guitar hero" type solo that is equal parts George Lynch and Yngwie Malmsteen.

Closer "Wolves" saves best for last. You are immediately pulled in by a rapid-fire intro, then a nice crunchy metallic walk-up into a very crunchy riff. A key change into the verse focuses attention to the lyrics. Everything ties together for a metal ride you sing along to. A metal anthem. All the stops are pulled out on a solo inspired by Dimebag. The solo goes into one of the coolest rhythmic parts of the album. "Wolves" closes the album in style.

A must have CD for the true metal fan's collection!!!!
